Christian Mission in East Asia
Christian missionaries have been active in East Asia since Nestorian Christians arrived in China in the first millennium AD. Since then, many Catholic and Protestant missionaries have worked in East Asia to try to convert local people to their mode of Christianity. Catholics include Jesuits, Dominicans and Franciscans, whilst Protestant missionaries include Methodists, Calvinists, Anglicans and Lutherans. After providing an overview of the history of Christian mission in this region, I focus on specific mission fields including Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia. I examine the lives of several prominent missionaries, their motivations for mission, their achievements and failures, and the texts that they produced together with local informants to communicate Christianity to prospective converts. I also present pictures of churches closely associated with mission which combine Western and Asian features. Where appropriate I also reflect on how the Christian message has been accommodated to local cultures and traditions.
