Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: Jesuit, Evolutionist and Visionary

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), renowned geologist, philosopher and Jesuit priest, devoted much of his career to the reconciliation of Christianity and evolution. He worked with integrity under difficult constraints, believing his task was to demonstrate how Christ represents a unifying spiritual force in a fragmented world. He encountered covert opposition from within the Catholic Church, and his seminal work, Le Phénomène Humain (translated as ‘The Phenomenon of Man’) was suppressed by the Vatican. It could only be published after his death. This seminar outlines his career, his legacy and the reception of some of his work by the Catholic church, scientists and philosophers.  Some controversies are discussed.
The talk, illustrated by power point, will last about 50 minutes, followed by questions and open discussion.  After the seminar, participants will receive by email an unpublished essay on Teilhard.
